Fred Jung: I have to apologize because I know it's been beaten into the ground, but how did you get the name "Tain"?

Jeff Tain Watts: Oh, here we go, Fred.

FJ: I had to ask.

JTW: (Laughing) I know. I was in Florida with Wynton. We were driving rental cars from West Palm Beach to Miami and Kenny Kirkland and I were in a car. We drove through one of those outdoor safari things with the drugged up animals, bears and lions and stuff like that. We left there and went past a gas station and it was called Chieftain Gas. And he said, "Chief Tain, oh, Jeff Tain, that's going to be your name." And I was like, "Sure, right." And the rest is that's it.

FJ: It stuck?

JTW: It stuck like a moth.

FJ: Are you happy with it?

JTW: It's cool, Fred. You can't really pick your nickname. I mean, it has absolutely no meaning at all, which is actually cool. It's wild.

Great post DSOP. JTW is the epitome of a musician/drummer. I learned of this guy a couple of years ago from an MD review of his solo CD "Bar Talk" and picked it up. Great recording. Lots of heavies on it. I love his style. I don't know how to describe it other than perhaps the next generation of Elvinish avant garde with some funk mixed in.

I just got hold of the Branford Marsalis "Love Supreme Live" DVD. If you like "Tain", it is a must have. Really a quality production. And Tain is on fire, of course. Best drum solo I have seen in a while.

For contempo jazz, when I can I listen closely to him awa of course JDeej, JBaron, JHamilton, BStewart, PErsk, WKennedy, BBlade, ACruz, AFoster, & JBallard, AWA 'the standards' Elvin, Art, Philly&Papa, Haynes, etc [to name but a few]...

Jeff was a MFer at that show...& so 'fluid, flowing,' & musically powerful...

On a side note...Shouldn't it've been [pronounced, "chief-] TIN" [or, "ton"] Watts? /;-p

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yup! I think phonically either "cheef" "ten" or "ton" is correct. When I read that story about how they mis-pronounced it and then stuck it on JTW, I LMAO. Proof that reading music and English are seperate and distinct skills . . . LMAOA.
